Insurance Reform is Reborn
April 2, 2003

Consumers need to know that the new proposal presented by Rep. Veiga takes into account that the average good driver who abides by the law should not have to suffer dramatic reductions in benefits in order to reduce insurance rates and instead offers good choices to consumers. It allows people plan options along with other options that will reduce premiums. This plan could work for insurance companies and for consumers. The proposal is a much better solution than HB 1225 was and we would like to see the Post support it on its own merit and encourage bipartisan support.

HB 1225 presented many problems for consumers. The heavy debates about HB 1225 and HB 1321 have given everyone an opportunity to really see what will actually effect change without dramatically reducing benefits. All of that debate was considered in drafting the new proposal.

It remains to be seen if this proposal will be given a chance, considering what the Post has said about partisan differences. If Rep. Tambor Williams would help with this good proposal, rather than trying to resurrect HB 1225, and Rep. Lola Spradley would allow late bill status maybe it can happen.
